Can You Sell a Junk Car With Expired Registration?

Lapsed tags rarely stop a junk sale. What matters is the title, what you do with the plates, and whether your state makes back fees follow the car.

Yes, you can usually sell a junk car with expired registration. The title proves you own the car; the registration only lets you drive it on public roads, and a junk car leaves on a tow truck. The two things that can trip you up are back fees (in some states they follow the car) and the plates.

Quick answer

Yesif the title is in your name

Expired tags rarely stop a junk sale. Bring the signed title, deal with the plates the way your state says, and file the seller’s notice. Back-fee rules differ by state, and California is the strictest. Rules below were read on state and company pages in October 2026.

Title vs registration: which one a junk buyer needs

People mix these up all the time. They are two different pieces of paper.

  • The title says who owns the car. A buyer, yard or online company needs it signed over to them. Peddle’s blog puts it plainly: a title proves ownership, while registration determines whether you can legally drive the car.
  • The registration (and the sticker on the plate) is your yearly permission to drive on public roads. When it lapses, you can’t drive the car legally. It doesn’t mean you stopped owning it.

So a car that sat in the yard for three years with dead tags is still yours to sell, as long as the title is in your name and nobody holds a lien on it. If the title is the problem, not the tags, read our junk car without a title guide instead.

What an expired registration does change

It changes three things. You can’t drive the car to the buyer. You may owe fees that a buyer cares about (more on that below). And a few buyers, like CarMax, ask you to bring current registration, so those lots are out. Junk buyers who tow the car away mostly don’t care.

Will buyers take a junk car with expired registration?

Most junk buyers will, because they tow the car and either scrap it, part it out or send it to auction. Here’s what each company says on its own pages.

Buyer What it says about expired registration or papers
Peddle Its blog says that as long as you have a clean title, it handles the paperwork for you.
CarBrain Its FAQ requires a valid title, signed by the registered owner, in the seller’s name. It says nothing about current tags.
Wheelzy Its FAQ says expired registration usually isn’t a requirement.
Carvana Its help center accepts expired registration, except in California. Carvana also needs the car to be safe to drive.
CarMax Asks you to bring current registration, ID for all titleholders and all keys.

There’s at least one real-world data point. A seller on Reddit reported in December 2025 that Peddle paid $1,000 for a 2016 Kia Soul that had been unregistered and uninsured for 1.5 years. The driver checked the mileage, title and VIN and paid on the spot. That’s one report, not a promise, but it matches what Peddle says.

Do you have to pay back registration fees first?

This is the question that changes by state. For a car going to the crusher, the buyer doesn’t plan to register it, but the fees can still matter.

California: fees follow the car

California is the tough one. A July 2025 Assembly committee analysis of SB 76 says that under current law, unpaid fees and penalties stay with the vehicle when it changes hands, and a private buyer has to pay them before registering it. The DMV may waive the penalties for a buyer who didn’t know about them, but that waiver is discretionary. SB 76 would shift those fees back to the seller starting in 2030.

The DMV’s own procedures for an individual who records a car as junk list “all fees and use tax due” along with the license plates. If your car will never be driven again, Planned Nonoperation (PNO) is the tool that stops new fees from piling up. The DMV accepts a PNO filing up to 90 days after the registration expires, with late penalties added, and only if the car hasn’t been driven or parked on public roads in the meantime.

Texas and Arizona

Texas is gentler. Its renewal rule (43 TAC 217.28) charges the full annual fee when you renew late and keeps your expiration month. The 20% penalty applies only if you were cited for driving with expired registration. Arizona’s MVD lists a late fee of $8 plus $4 for each month overdue, capped at $100.

For every other state, ask your DMV or county tax office one question: “If I sell this VIN today, what does the next owner owe?” That number tells you whether a buyer will knock it off the offer.

Junk car with expired registration: state rules for 7 big states

We read each state’s DMV page in October 2026 (Florida’s state site blocked us, so that row uses a county tax collector page, and Illinois uses Peddle’s state guide). “Check” means we didn’t find a clear back-fee rule, so ask your DMV.

State Plates when you sell Back fees Seller’s notice
California Standard plates stay on the car. Personalized or special plates come off. Stay with the car. The next owner pays to register. REG 138 within 5 days
Texas Optional to remove. Keep, transfer or deface them. Late renewal is the annual fee. 20% penalty only if cited. Vehicle Transfer Notification within 30 days
Florida Plate belongs to you, not the car. Transfer or surrender. Check with your county tax collector Notice of Sale, form HSMV 82050
New York Transfer or surrender to DMV, before canceling insurance Check Surrender receipt FS-6T
Illinois Remove. Keep or transfer (per Peddle’s guide). Check Seller’s Report of Sale, per Peddle
Arizona Remove before the buyer takes the car $8 plus $4 a month late fee, $100 cap Sold Notice as soon as you sell
Georgia Plates don’t transfer. Keep, transfer or surrender. Check Cancel registration, then insurance

The seller’s notice matters more than the plates. In California, the REG 138 relieves you of later parking tickets and violations, but your name stays on the record until the new owner transfers the title.

What to do with the license plates

An expired sticker doesn’t change the plate rule. Do what your state says on pickup day.

  • Plates stay with you (Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Illinois). Take them off before the tow driver hooks up the car. Peddle’s Texas guide says you can transfer or destroy them, and TxDMV says to deface plates you don’t keep.
  • Plates stay on the car (California standard plates). Leave them on, then file the REG 138.
  • Plates go back to the DMV (New York). New York says that if you cancel the insurance without surrendering the plates, it will suspend the registration and can suspend your driver’s license.

Peddle’s state guides give the same order every time: handle plates and registration first, then cancel insurance. Don’t flip that order in New York. Our how to sign over a car title guide covers the signature lines buyers check.

California’s car retirement program and the 120-day rule

California’s Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) pays $1,350, $1,500 or $2,000 to retire a car at a state-contracted dismantler, depending on income and smog results. It’s the only time in this guide that registration status decides the money.

The Bureau of Automotive Repair requires that the car be currently registered, or that all fees be paid and the sticker be expired no more than 120 days. It also can’t have had a lapse over 120 days in the two years before the current expiration. The title must be in your name, and the car has to be driven in under its own power and pass an inspection.

So a car with tags that expired two years ago won’t qualify, and neither will a car on long-term PNO that doesn’t run.

CAP or a junk buyer?

If your registration is current or barely lapsed and the car still drives, apply to CAP first. Don’t junk the car until the eligibility letter arrives. If the registration lapsed long ago, or the car doesn’t run, skip CAP and compare buyer offers. Our junkyard payout guide has the CAP amounts next to typical yard prices.

Don’t drive it, and watch where it’s parked

An unregistered car shouldn’t go on the road, even for the two miles to the yard. Texas lets a car run five working days past expiration without penalty, then the citation can reach $200. In California, if a car on PNO is driven or parked where it can be cited, full registration fees and penalties for that year come due.

That’s another reason to sell to a buyer who tows. Peddle and CarBrain both include free towing. For a car that won’t start, see selling a non-running car.

What it's worth with dead tags

Registration doesn’t change scrap weight. iScrap’s national average for a complete car was $183.63 per ton on October 23, 2026, and most yards pay about $140 to $200 a ton. CarBrain says its junk-car offers average $250 to $750. Our scrap car prices page has the details.

Next steps for a junk car with expired tags

  1. Find the title and check it’s in your name with no lienholder listed.
  2. Look up your state’s plate rule and seller’s notice in the table above.
  3. In California, decide between CAP (lapse of 120 days or less, car drives) and a junk buyer.
  4. Request two offers, answer the title and condition questions honestly, and get the amount in writing before the tow.
  5. On pickup day: sign the title, handle the plates, file the seller’s notice, then cancel insurance.

FAQ

Can I junk a car that hasn't been registered in years?

Usually, yes, as long as you have the title in your name. Registration is permission to drive on public roads, and a junk car leaves on a tow truck. Peddle says that if you have a clean title, it handles the paperwork. One Reddit seller reported that Peddle paid $1,000 for a Kia Soul that had been unregistered and uninsured for 1.5 years, with no issue at pickup.

Do I have to pay back registration fees before I sell my car?

It depends on the state. In California, unpaid registration fees and penalties stay with the vehicle, and whoever registers it next has to pay them, so expect a buyer to price that in. Texas charges a full annual fee when you renew late, with a 20% penalty only if you were cited. Arizona's late fee is $8 plus $4 a month, capped at $100. Ask your DMV for the payoff on your VIN.

Does Peddle buy cars with expired registration?

Peddle's own blog says that as long as you have a clean title, it handles the paperwork for you. The offer form asks about ownership, title and condition. Peddle can revise an offer at pickup if the car doesn't match what you described, so answer the title and condition questions honestly. Towing is free and you can decline the offer.

What do I do with the license plates when I junk a car with expired tags?

Follow your state's plate rule, even if the sticker is expired. In California, standard plates stay on the car. In Texas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida and Illinois the plates come off and stay with you. New York says to surrender plates before you cancel the insurance, or it will suspend the registration and can suspend your license.

Can I get California's $1,350 to $2,000 retirement payment with expired registration?

Only if the lapse is short. California's Bureau of Automotive Repair requires the car to be currently registered, or to have all fees paid with a sticker expired no more than 120 days, and no lapse over 120 days in the two years before. The car also has to drive in under its own power. A car parked for years won't qualify, so a junk buyer is the realistic route.
