The big online buyers all run roughly the same script. It costs a few minutes and no money.

Enter the car. Year, make, model, mileage, whether it runs, damage, missing parts and title status.
See the offer. Peddle shows it on screen with no account needed. CarBrain says it quotes in under 90 seconds, though some cars get the number by call or email instead. Both give you up to seven days to accept.
Schedule the tow. Peddle says a local carrier contacts you within one business day, with pickup typically 24 to 48 hours after scheduling. CarBrain says pickup averages 24 to 48 hours after you accept.
Hand over the title and keys. The driver checks the car against your answers, then you get paid, usually by check as the car leaves.

Wheelzy, Junk Car Medics and Copart Direct follow a similar flow, and all three say towing is free.

Weight sets the baseline. Yards pay by the ton for a complete car, and iScrap’s crowd-sourced average was $177.58 per ton as of September 2026. Most yards sit between $140 and $200, and single-yard reports have run from $105 to $250 over the past year. The gaps between yards are bigger than the month-to-month movement, so a second phone call beats waiting for a better market.

Buyers publish bigger numbers, and they are company claims we could not verify. CarBrain says $250 to $750 on average. Junk Car Medics claims $300 to $1,500 for most junk cars. Peddle publishes no average, but its Texas page lists five recent payouts of $305 to $370 on cars built between 2000 and 2015, without saying whether they were junk condition.

Completeness matters at the yard. iScrap counts the engine, transmission, catalytic converter, battery, radiator, wheels and wiring harness as a complete car, and warns that selling the converter separately could make yards treat yours as incomplete. For most junk cars, an online buyer is the simplest route, even when the car will not start. They line up a local tow and a buyer, and free towing is standard on the Peddle, CarBrain, Wheelzy and Junk Car Medics sites. Peddle buys in all 50 states. Yards pay by weight, so a heavy, complete car is worth a call or two. A 5,500 lb SUV is about $488 in scrap at the September 2026 average. Treat the online offer as the number to beat.

A private buyer can beat both when the car runs. One Trustpilot reviewer of CarBrain says a Ford E350 van drew offers of $600 and $800, then sold for $7,000 on Facebook Marketplace (a customer’s account, not verified).

Expect a check more often than bills. Peddle’s help center says the default is a company check at pickup, and cash “is not guaranteed” because it depends on the tow carrier. CarBrain pays by check at pickup or by mail. Wheelzy and Junk Car Medics say check or cash at pickup, and Copart Direct says cash.

If you can’t be home, Peddle can mail a check (7 to 10 business days after pickup) or send ACH (1 to 3 business days). Unattended pickup works only if the carrier allows it and the titled owner signed the title in advance. Ask the buyer in writing how you will be paid. Peddle says it does not cover third-party check-cashing fees, so ask your bank what it charges before you show up with a business check.

Private sale: watch for fake checks

A buyer who sends a check for more than the price and asks you to refund the difference is running a scam. The FTC says a bad check can surface weeks after the bank releases the funds, and you owe the bank the money. Verify a cashier’s check with the issuing bank first.

Why offers drop at pickup and how to keep yours intact

Price cuts at the curb are one of the two complaints that keep coming up in this business. The other is a tow truck that shows up late or not at all. A June 2026 BBB complaint describes a $470 online CarBrain offer for a 2004 VW Passat that dropped to $250 at pickup because the catalytic converter was missing. CarBrain’s written reply says the information submitted “did not accurately reflect” the car. Low-star Trustpilot reviews describe similar cuts at Peddle (one cites $865 down to $600) and at Wheelzy (one cites a $55 cut). These are customer accounts, not findings.

Both companies also carry strong ratings, Peddle 4.7 on Trustpilot from 210,482 reviews and CarBrain 4.8 from 7,789. Both invite those reviews, so read the one-star ones too.

Some cuts are fair, because the car did not match the quote. Others are disputed, and you can’t settle that in the driveway, so build a paper trail.

Describe the car the way the driver will see it

Answer every condition question straight: does it start, is the converter still on, what does the odometer say, where is the damage. In the reviews and complaints we read, the reasons given for cuts include a converter, mileage or condition that did not match the quote. CarBrain says photos and the VIN improve the offer.

Peddle’s terms (updated August 12, 2026) list what the driver checks, from mounted wheels and a working battery to whether it starts and drives, plus the engine, transmission, exhaust and odometer. If a major part is missing, even one nobody asked about, Peddle reserves the right to recalculate the offer or refuse the pickup.

Get two or three offers before you accept

Offers for the same car can differ by hundreds. Trustpilot reviewers describe CarBrain offers of $85 and $200 that another buyer beat with $600 and about $700 (customer claims, not verified). Run Peddle, CarBrain and Wheelzy in one sitting. Peddle and CarBrain both hold offers for up to seven days, so there is no rush to say yes to the first one. Get the number and payment method in writing

Screenshot the offer, keep the confirmation email, and ask the driver to confirm the final figure before hooking up. Peddle says an accepted amount is locked unless the car was misrepresented or a major part is missing, and that you can cancel any time with no fees. Its help center says it “will make you an updated offer if the value has changed” but does not say what happens if you decline one. Cancelling is final: a fresh request can come back with a different number. Peddle also expects the car in a safe, accessible spot and does not cover impound or storage fees.

Same-day cash can happen, but nobody promises it. Peddle’s help center puts offer to payment at 2 to 5 days, same day in some cases. It says a carrier usually calls within one business day, picks up 24 to 48 hours after scheduling, and will not guarantee same-day pickup. Wheelzy advertises same-day service, so start in the morning.

Find the paperwork. Signed title in your name, photo ID, keys. CarBrain requires a title in your name. Peddle says to contact it in advance if yours is missing. A few states allow narrow no-title sales of old, low-value cars, covered on our junk car without a title page. Confirm with your DMV.
Clear any loan. Peddle requires liens to be resolved before the sale, and CarBrain says financed owners must pay off the loan or do a collateral swap.
Request two or three offers with identical answers each time.
Accept the best one and save the amount and payment method in writing.
Prep the car. Remove personal items and paired phone data, and pull the plates if your state requires it.
Swap at the curb. Check the driver’s form, then trade the signed title for payment. Keep a bill of sale copy. Peddle lists 16 states that require one as of 2026, including New York, Ohio and Washington.
Close it out. Cancel the insurance and file your state’s release of liability. Deadlines vary, so check your DMV’s site.
