You can sell a non-running car without fixing it first. Online buyers, scrap yards and a few charities take cars that won’t start, and most of the online buyers tow for free. Expect far less than the same car brings running. Sell Car Advisor’s 2026 quote data puts a car that won’t start about 48% below a comparable car that drives.

What counts as a non-running car

People search “sell my not running car” and “sell a car that doesn’t run” and mean two different problems. Buyers price them differently, so say which one you have.

Won’t start vs starts but won’t drive

Junk Car Medics calls a car drivable only if it starts and moves under its own power without pushing or towing. Anything short of that is a non-runner. In Sell Car Advisor’s data, a car that won’t start was offered about 48% less than a comparable car that drives, and one that starts but can’t be driven about 41% less. Both cost you. Not starting costs a little more.

Why anyone pays for a dead car

Peddle says the cars it buys end up as used parts, scrap through recyclers, or reconditioned resale. A dead engine doesn’t make the doors, seats, wheels and metal worthless. It also fits how yards pay: iScrap defines a complete car as engine, transmission, catalytic converter, battery, radiator, rims and tires, and wiring harness. Buyers of non-runners are paying for parts and metal.

How much is a non-running car worth in 2026?

Somewhere between scrap weight and what the car brings running, and the spread is wide. Scrap prices below are as of September 2026. The offer data carries its own dates.

The floor: scrap weight

iScrap’s crowd-sourced average for a complete car was $177.58 per ton, and most yards pay about $140–$200. A 3,000 pound car is 1.5 tons, so roughly $210–$300. That is your floor if the car is complete. A car missing parts can fall into a lower incomplete-car rate, and single yard reports over the past year ran from about $105 to $250, so call around.

The ceiling: what it would bring running

Sell Car Advisor’s middle offer for cars 10 years and older, in any condition, was $510 for a sedan, $675 for an SUV, $850 for a pickup and $495 for a van (10,619 offers, July 2021 to September 2026). Over the last twelve months, half of all offers on those older cars fell between $355 and $1,115. These are online-buyer offers, not sale prices, and they mix runners with non-runners.

Automoblog’s Peddle review (May 2024) describes a 2004 Corolla with under 50,000 miles that wouldn’t start and had broken glass and lights: a $890 Peddle offer against a $4,000 fair-condition KBB value. That is one car, not a pattern.

Waiting costs money too. For 29 cars 10 years and older that the same buyer quoted twice more than a year apart, the middle change was minus $195, and 69% got a lower second offer. For 42 cars quoted one to three months apart, the middle change was $0. Two months of shopping around costs nothing in that data. A year does.

Fix it first or sell a non-running car as-is?

Sell as-is unless the repair costs far less than the gap between what the car brings dead and what it brings running.

A rule of thumb that fits on a napkin

Get a written repair quote from a shop that has diagnosed the car.
Get two or three as-is offers. They are free and take minutes.
Look up what the same car sells for running, using comparable listings or KBB.
Subtract: running value, minus the best as-is offer, minus the repair bill.

If the result isn’t clearly positive, sell. Leave room for the second problem that shows up after the first repair. With made-up numbers: a car that brings $2,500 running and $600 as-is leaves a $1,900 gap. A $1,500 repair nets $400 on paper, and one more failed part erases it. Sell.

Sell Car Advisor’s version is simpler: when repairs top 50% of the car’s current value, selling as-is usually makes more sense. The popular “$3,000 rule” is looser. Last Chance Auto Repairs calls it a budgeting guideline, not an industry standard: when a major repair nears $3,000, look harder at the car’s value and reliability.

Rule out the cheap failures first

Plenty of “dead” cars have a boring problem. Sell Car Advisor names a dead battery as the simple one. Pay for a diagnosis before you decide, so you don’t sell a cheap fix for scrap or pay for a repair on a car that needed a new engine. If the verdict is engine or transmission, read selling a car with a blown engine or selling a car with a bad transmission before you spend anything.

Sell Car Advisor sent the same 2007 Trailblazer that wouldn’t drive to four buyers and got offers from $345 to $375. On other cars the spread is wider: across 1,084 older cars quoted by two or more buyers the same day, the best offer was at least double the worst 44% of the time. Non-starters also got just one offer 13% of the time, against 4% for cars that drive, so ask early. Junk car buyers compares the full list.

Local yards and parts yards

Call one. Yards pay by weight, so the floor above is your number. A poster in r/Seattle who sold a blown-transmission van to Pick n Pull got around $200 and said the yard pays more if you drop the car off yourself. Pick Your Part says it buys non-running cars, arranges towing, and may take deductions for whatever keeps the car from running. iScrap says most states require a title at a yard, and some yards accept registration or insurance proof, so call ahead.

Private sale and dealer trade-in

A private buyer may pay more for a wanted model, but you have to find that buyer, and they have to accept a car that won’t start. One Facebook group post in the search results advertises $100–$400 for non-runners. The FTC warns about buyers who overpay by check and ask for a refund of the difference. The check can turn out fake weeks later, and you owe the bank.

Dealers are a poor fit. Carvana accepts a car only if it can safely drive it, and CarMax’s selling guide says dealerships expect the car to be running and safe to drive.

Non-running car donation

Charities take non-runners too. Kars4Kids, for one, says it accepts cars in any condition, including ones that haven’t started in years, and charges nothing for pickup. You get no cash, only a tax receipt. Vet the charity first: give.org reports that a California court ruled on May 8, 2026 that Kars4Kids’ advertising was untrue or misleading, and that BBB Wise Giving Alliance keeps a nondisclosure report on it because the charity did not answer its information requests.

Per IRS Publication 526, if the charity sells the car for $500 or less you may deduct the smaller of $500 or fair market value. Above $500 you generally deduct the smaller of the sale price or fair market value, and you need Form 1098-C or an equivalent acknowledgment. Sell Car Advisor notes most non-runners don’t clear $500. This isn’t tax advice.

Towing a car that won’t start

Where free towing is not free

Peddle, CarBrain, Wheelzy, Junk Car Medics and Copart Direct all advertise free towing. Carvana charges for pickup where it offers it. WeBuyAnyCar says it does not pay for towing, so you bring the car in and call the branch first. Pick Your Part says it will “arrange” towing and never calls it free. Storage is the sneaky cost. Peddle doesn’t cover impound or tow-yard fees, and CarBrain says storage and repair costs before the sale are yours. One BBB complaint against CarBrain (August 2025) describes $30 a day in tow-yard storage while a pickup slipped four days. That is one seller’s allegation, but it’s why you book a date you can meet.

Make it easy to load

Tell the buyer if the car sits in a garage, behind another vehicle or on soft ground. Peddle’s terms say carriers don’t do emergency recovery and you must leave the car in a safe, accessible spot. Flat tires and missing keys are worth mentioning too.

What to tell buyers before they quote

Say why it won’t run

“It won’t start” is not a diagnosis. Give the real reason if you have one: blown engine, bad transmission, dead electrical system, or “sat for three years, no idea.” Sell Car Advisor says more detail upfront makes a lower price at pickup less likely.

Missing parts, damage and the catalytic converter

Peddle’s offer flow asks about the catalytic converter, and its terms let it recalculate the offer or refuse pickup if a major component is missing, even if nobody asked. CarBrain says a car missing its engine or transmission doesn’t meet its minimum standards, though a missing bumper, headlights or radio is fine. Wheelzy needs both engine and transmission present.

A June 2026 BBB complaint says a $470 CarBrain offer for a 2004 VW Passat became $250 at pickup over a missing catalytic converter. CarBrain’s BBB reply says the details submitted did not accurately reflect the car. That is one seller’s account and one company reply, not a finding.

Answer like the driver will inspect it

Junk Car Medics says it can adjust or decline if the car differs significantly from what you reported. Peddle says an accepted offer holds if your description is accurate and nothing major is missing.

Paperwork for a car that won’t start

Rules vary by state, so confirm with your DMV. This is a general checklist, not legal advice.

Title

Title is the sticking point for non-runners. CarBrain requires one in your name. Peddle says to contact it in advance if you don’t have one, since alternatives may exist. Wheelzy says it may buy without a title depending on where the car is.

Where a buyer will take a car without one, the exceptions are narrow. In Texas, a recycler can dismantle a car bought without a title only if it is at least 13 years old and has been unregistered for at least 7 years, per TxDMV (rule effective January 1, 2026). Two more items depend on your state. Some states require a notarized title, and Peddle says the notary fee is yours. Peddle also lists 16 states, including New York, Ohio and Washington, that require a bill of sale as of 2026.

Loans and the DMV notice

Liens have to be resolved with the lender before the sale, per Peddle, and Junk Car Medics wants the loan paid off first. After the sale, cancel your insurance and tell your DMV the car is gone. CarMax’s selling guide lists filing a release of liability, which states name differently. Kars4Kids’ FAQ, for example, calls it a Report of Sale in Washington, Illinois and Minnesota.

Pickup day: what happens when the driver arrives

Peddle says the carrier gives the car a quick once-over and checks it against your answers. If it matches, you sign, hand over keys and title, and get paid. Peddle’s default is a company check at pickup, and cash depends on the carrier. CarBrain pays by check at pickup or by mail.

On timing, Peddle says a carrier contacts you within one business day and pickup is typically 24 to 48 hours after scheduling, with same-day pickup not guaranteed. CarBrain says pickup averages 24 to 48 hours after you accept. If you can’t be there, Peddle says a mailed check takes 7 to 10 business days and ACH 1 to 3 business days.

If the driver offers less, you can walk away. Peddle says you can cancel with no fees or obligations, though a new request means a new offer.

What is the best way to sell a non-running car?

For most people it is an online instant-offer buyer. Peddle and CarBrain both buy cars that will not start and tow them for free, per their own help pages. Peddle's default is a company check at pickup, and CarBrain pays by check at pickup or by mail. Request at least two offers, call one local yard, and take the best number you can back with a title. A private sale can pay more, but you handle the buyer, and a broken car is a hard sell.

Who pays the best for non-running cars?

A stand-in must be 18 or older to take payment, and the titled owner has to complete the ownership paperwork personally. CarBrain’s driver needs the properly signed original title at pickup, so someone has to have it in hand.

Can I trade in a car that won’t start?

Rarely on good terms. Carvana takes a car only if it can safely drive it, and CarMax’s guide says dealerships expect the car to be running and safe to drive.
