Step 1: Decide whether to scrap it or sell it

What to do with a junk car comes down to one choice: get paid by weight or get paid for the specific car. How to scrap a car has a one-line answer: sell it to a yard, which pays by weight. That is about $140–$200 per ton at most US yards as of September 2026, and iScrap’s crowd-sourced national average is $177.58. A 3,000 pound car is 1.5 tons, so expect roughly $210–$300. An online buyer prices your car instead of its weight. CarBrain says its average payout is $250–$750.

Step 2: Get cash to junk your car by comparing free offers

Anyone who wants to junk their car for cash needs three numbers: an offer from Peddle, an offer from CarBrain, and a quote from one local yard. The online forms ask for the year, make, model, mileage, whether it starts and drives, what is missing, damage and title status. Both Peddle and CarBrain say you get up to seven days to accept.

Answer honestly. Peddle says an accepted offer holds only when your description is accurate and no major parts are missing. A June 2026 BBB complaint says a $470 CarBrain offer fell to $250 at pickup over a missing catalytic converter, and CarBrain replied that the details submitted did not match the car. Step 3: Sort the title and any loan

The signed title is the main document. CarBrain says it requires one in your name. Peddle calls it the primary document, though it says to contact Peddle in advance if yours is unavailable. If a lender still holds a lien, Peddle says it must be settled with the lienholder before the sale, and CarBrain says financed owners either pay off the loan or do a “collateral swap.” Some states also want your signature notarized, at your cost.

If the title is lost, order a duplicate before you book anything. Texas charges $2 by mail or $5.45 in person, New York charges $20, and California says titles usually arrive within 15 to 30 days. Step 4: Check your state’s junk paperwork

Rules vary by state, so confirm with your DMV. This is what official pages said in September 2026, not legal advice.

California: record the car as Junk first

California’s DMV staff manual (section 19.030) says an owner who dismantles a car before recording it as Junk is subject to an investigative service fee. The plates go back to DMV, and a transfer made for wrecking or dismantling skips the smog inspection. If the ownership paper is missing, a car worth under $5,000 needs other ownership documents plus a Statement of Facts (REG 256), and one worth $5,000 or more needs a bond. States that require a bill of sale

Peddle lists 16 states that require a bill of sale as of 2026, including Colorado, New York, Ohio and Washington. It should show the VIN, the sale price and both signatures. Keep a copy even where it is optional.

Step 5: Empty the car and pull the plates

Clear the glovebox, trunk and door pockets, and take off any toll tag. Peddle’s pickup checklist also says to clear data from paired phones, navigation systems and connected-car accounts. Pull the plates if your state requires it, and ask the buyer which way it goes.

Most checklists also say to remove valuable parts. Do that only if you plan to sell them and the buyer knows. Peddle’s terms let it recalculate the offer or refuse pickup when a major component is missing, even one nobody asked about. iScrap defines a complete car as engine, transmission, catalytic converter, battery, radiator, rims and tires, and wiring harness, and warns that selling the converter separately could make a yard count the car as incomplete. Step 6: Book the pickup

After you accept, Peddle assigns a local carrier that contacts you within one business day, and pickup is typically 24 to 48 hours after scheduling. Same-day pickup can’t be guaranteed. CarBrain says pickup averages 24 to 48 hours after you accept.

Park where a flatbed can reach the car. Peddle’s carriers don’t do emergency recovery, and impound or tow-yard fees are yours. You can skip being there if your carrier allows unattended pickup and the titled owner signed the title in advance. See junk car removal for the tow itself.

Step 7: Swap the title for payment

Title and payment change hands at the same moment. Peddle’s default is a company check at pickup, handed over once the car is secured and documents are exchanged, and cash isn’t guaranteed. CarBrain also pays by check at pickup or by mail, and its FAQ says it doesn’t get your car until you get your check.

The driver checks the car against your answers. If it matches, you sign, hand over the keys and get paid. If the offer changes, Peddle says you can cancel with no fees or obligations. If you can’t be there, Peddle says a mailed check takes 7 to 10 business days and ACH takes 1 to 3. Before the truck leaves, photograph the car, the VIN and the odometer.

Step 8: File your release of liability and cancel insurance

Release of liability

The car is gone, but the registration may still say it’s yours. California gives you 5 calendar days to file a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, online or on paper form REG 138. Once filed, parking violations, traffic violations and civil claims after the sale date become the buyer’s problem. Texas gives you 30 days for its Vehicle Transfer Notification, which protects you from parking tickets and toll violations the buyer racks up. Other states have their own form and deadline, so file the day the car leaves.

Insurance

Cancel or move coverage after the car leaves, not before. Peddle’s checklist says to cancel after the sale, and a delayed pickup would leave the car sitting there uninsured.

Step 9: What happens to the car after it is junked

Peddle says cars end up as used parts, scrap through recyclers or reconditioned resale. Junk yards and salvage yards report each car to NMVTIS at least monthly, with the VIN, the date and who it came from.

A junk brand sticks. NMVTIS says a brand applied by a state becomes a permanent part of the vehicle’s record, Illinois says a certificate of title shall not again be issued after a junking certificate, and Texas says nonrepairable titles issued after September 1, 2003 can never be rebuilt or registered. Mistakes that cost people money when they junk a car

Quoting the car as complete after pulling parts. Peddle can recalculate or refuse pickup, and CarBrain says a car missing its engine or transmission doesn’t meet its minimum standards.
Signing the title over before payment shows up. Do both at once.
Skipping the release of liability. The California and Texas clocks run whether you remember or not.
Trusting an overpayment check in a private sale. The FTC warns that a buyer who overpays and asks for the difference back is running a fake-check scam, and the check can turn out fake weeks later, leaving you owing the bank.
